LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Several families on Wednesday challenged Kentucky’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youths, claiming the prohibition interferes with parental rights to seek established medical treatment for their children. They are asking that a judge block a portion of a sweeping measure passed this year by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature. The federal lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Seven Kentucky families with transgender children are listed as plaintiffs. “Under the Constitution, trans youth in Kentucky have the right to medically necessary care,” Corey Shapiro, legal director for the ACLU of Kentucky, said in a statement. “We are filing litigation today to protect against this imminent threat to their well-being and make certain they can thrive by continuing to receive medical care.”Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office said it was re...

Twins reliever Brock Stewart ‘to pitch in some meaningful spots’

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:53:53 GMT

CHICAGO — When the bullpen phone rang late in Tuesday night’s game, with the Twins and White Sox locked in a close battle, Brock Stewart wasn’t quite expecting his name to be called. But with the score tied 2-2, the Twins did indeed summon Stewart to pitch the ninth inning, a big show of faith for a veteran reliever who just a week ago hadn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2019.“I literally told myself going out, ‘This is a sweet opportunity you have in front of you so you should come out there and attack,’ ” Stewart said. His outing — his third scoreless appearance since joining the Twins — didn’t go exactly as he would have wanted: He walked three, one intentionally, but he managed to work his way out of the inning unscathed, getting the Twins to extra innings. Tuesday, he found himself in that situation in part because fellow relievers Jorge López and Griffin Jax already had been used and Jhoan Duran was down for the day. But moving forward, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said he...

Letters: Urgency about teaching reading is good. We also need to be urgent about math

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:53:53 GMT

Math, tooLiteracy is getting a lot of attention at the State Capitol and rightfully so. Reading proficiency has been in decline for a decade and the pandemic only made matters worse. The Minnesota House and Senate education finance bills dedicate millions to improve reading instruction. These are worthy investments that I applaud.I would ask our state lawmakers to apply that same level of urgency to helping students who are struggling with mathematics. During the pandemic, math scores fell further than reading scores. And sadly, those impacts fell disproportionately on our low income students and widened gaps between our white students and students of color and American Indian students.Minnesota has a proven program that is already working in our schools. Minnesota Math Corps is serving thousands of students statewide and is helping accelerate math growth for K-8 students below grade level. The relationships the Math Corps tutors make with students and the individualized supports th...

What would a debt ceiling failure mean for Americans?

Lawmakers are bracing for what could shape up to be a dramatic few weeks for both parties, as they brace for a high-stakes battle over the nation’s borrowing limit. The Treasury Department said this week that the nation could have until as soon as the start of June before it exhausts the “extraordinary measures” implemented in January to keep the nation from defaulting on its debt. Leaders have warned a default is possible if either side doesn’t budge from their positions as Republicans and Democrats ramp up pressure. However, members on both sides have expressed confidence Congress will strike a deal in time to raise the debt limit, which caps how much money the Treasury can owe to cover the country’s bills. But here’s what could happen if they fail.Social Security, other benefits and pay could be delayedExperts warn a default could mean trouble for individuals relying on a check from the government, whether you’re a Social Security recipient or a federal employee. In a re...
