Los Gatos moves to make a name for itself as tourist destination

Catherine Somers has always wanted Los Gatos to be seen as a tourist destination. But by the time the town council came around to her vision—approving $88,000 last week to fund the town’s Visitor and Information Center, social media and marketing—it was too late for her and the Chamber of Commerce she oversees as executive director. Somers is stepping down on June 30, and the rest of the Chamber’s three-person staff is set to leave this summer.“We were totally surprised,” Somers said of the allocation. “We weren’t even going to say anything this year because of the budget constraints. They never really listened to us before.”Somers said there’s no bad blood between the Chamber and the council, and that the increase in funds will help the new executive director, who has not yet been hired, start with a clean slate.“With that validation and with the new executive director starting here, it really does open the doors for more collaboration with the town staff,” Somers said. “I th...Pebble Beach: Nine-year-old becomes youngest ever to attempt US Women’s Open qualification

By Jack Bantock | CNNWhen 19-year-old South Korean prodigy Inbee Park lifted the first of her seven major championships at the 2008 US Women’s Open, she became the tournament’s youngest ever champion.Bella Simões would not be born for around another six years. On Tuesday, she attempted to qualify for the major. At nine years old, the Brazilian is the youngest player ever to attempt qualification to the tournament, set to tee off at California’s acclaimed Pebble Beach course for the first time in its 78-year history in July.Simões hit the very first shot of her qualifying group at The Club at Mediterra in Naples, Florida. An impeccable swing technique — posted to the USGA’s Twitter account — drew plenty of plaudits.Yet that should come as no surprise given Simões’ already-impressive résumé. A US Kids Golf World champion for the under-seven’s category in 2020, she defended her title a year later before clinching another victory in the eig...More grant money means expanded fire mitigation in Los Gatos Creek Watershed

The Los Gatos Creek Watershed Collaborative received one of the largest awards last week in CAL FIRE’s latest round of Forest Health Grants. The $6.3 million grant will go toward expanding the collaborative’s project area by 841 acres to include Aldercroft Heights and Lupin Lodge, residential neighborhoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains, bringing overall coverage to 2,700 acres.Aldercroft Heights and Lupin Lodge have a handful of areas that are at a high fire risk. Residents have to travel one-lane roads during evacuations, which can cause traffic and congestion, said Seth Schalet, chief executive officer of the Saratoga-based Santa Clara County FireSafe Council. The watershed is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains that border Saratoga, Los Gatos and San Jose, near where the CZU Lightning Complex Fire burned 86,509 acres in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties in 2020. It also holds water reservoirs that serve more than 100,000 people.“There’s a risk of fire and a history of fire,” sa...Asian American & Pacific Islander symposium set for May 20

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Hollywood writers’ strike that’s snarling the television and movie industries has now scrambled the White House schedule. A MTV special on mental health that was expected to feature Vice President Kamala Harris next week has been postponed, according to her office.A person familiar with the decision said Harris chose not to travel to the Los Angeles-area event because that would have been seen as crossing the picket line. That’s a political nonstarter for Democrats who rely on union support. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity about the decision to postpone MTV’s Mental Health Action Day Conversation.President Joe Biden called for a “fair deal” for writers at a White House movie screening this week. “Nights like these are a reminder of stories and the importance of treating storytellers with the dignity, respect and the value they deserve,” Biden said. “I sincerely hope the writers s...Sports on TV for May 15-21

(Courtesy Arlington County)The plan for a pedestrian bridge that would create a direct five-minute-walk between Crystal City, in Arlington, Virginia, and Ronald Reagan National Airport is expected to take a big step forward this weekend. The Arlington Board is set to endorse plans to build a girder-style bridge that would connect the entrance of a future Virginia Railway Express station at 2011 Crystal Drive to DCA’s Terminal 2, tying in with the Mount Vernon Trail, and crossing over the George Washington Parkway, to provided a straight-shot for pedestrians, bicyclists and micro-mobility users. The bridge coincides with the still-developing National Landing, which will soon open the first part of Amazon’s second headquarters.Last year, the county trumpeted that the new bridge “would make National Landing the only downtown in the countr...Latest news
