By Michael R. Sisak and Jennifer Peltz | Associated PressNEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump’s lawyer went on the attack Thursday against writer E. Jean Carroll’s claims that she was raped by Trump in the 1990s, using cross examination to try to discredit the longtime advice columnist before a jury at a New York civil trial.Attorney Joe Tacopina began his questioning in Manhattan federal court by citing Carroll’s own words as he asked her to acknowledge that she has described her account as odd.“Certain parts of this story are difficult to conceive of,” she said.Tacopina used the word “supposedly” in reference to her rape claim, drawing an immediate and stern correction from the writer.“Not supposedly. I was raped,” she said.A day earlier, she began her testimony, telling how a chance encounter with Trump at a Bergdorf Goodman store in spring 1996 turned from flirtatious frivolity in the desolate lingerie section into a viol...

The “Big Melt” has begun. As the gargantuan Sierra snowpack gets heated up by warmer temperatures this week, many of the Golden State’s major waterways are expected to see a surge in flow from the melting snow — though major floods still seem a ways off for now. The only rivers forecast to exceed flood stage in the next four days are the Merced River near Yosemite Valley, which will close down parts of the national park, and the West Fork Carson River in Alpine County. The map below shows the two locations where minor flooding is forecast. Those spots are symbolized by yellow dots. These dot forecasts only predict flooding within the next four days. The blue lines represent California waterways that are expected to flow at an above-normal rate within the next 10 days. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk to give a deposition in a lawsuit blaming Autopilot for a fatal crash in 2018.Tesla’s argument for why Musk shouldn’t be required to testify is “deeply troubling to the court,” Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Evette D. Pennypacker said in the order. The electric-car maker argued that it couldn’t vouch for the authenticity of videotaped interviews in which Musk touted the company’s driver-assistance technology, saying it’s possible some of them were digitally altered.“Their position is that because Mr. Musk is famous and might be more of a target for deep fakes, his public statements are immune,” the judge wrote. “In other words, Mr. Musk, and others in his position, can simply say whatever they like in the public domain, then hide behind the potential for their recorded statements being a deep fake to avoid taking ownership o...
