BERKELEY — Two men driving a Maserati SUV failed to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle Thursday morning and pointed guns at a man walking his dog before fleeing, police said.The attempted theft, from a Toyota Prius, happened about 6:08 a.m. Thursday in the area of Bancroft Way and McGee Avenue in central Berkeley.Police said the men could not steal the converter because it was equipped with a theft prevention device.While the men were trying to steal the converter, a man walking his dog passed by, prompting the suspects to brandish a rifle and pistol at the man, police said. The man was not injured.The men then sped off in the white Maserati SUV, which had paper plates. They are being sought, police said. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not released.So far this year there have been 231 catalytic converter thefts in Berkeley, authorities said. (KRON) -- An elderly care facility in San Mateo that was the site of a triple poisoning last year is in danger of losing its license. The State of California has filed a legal action to revoke the license for Atria Park of San Mateo, following the high-profile incident in which two residents died.The poisoning occurred in August of 2022. Investigators believe that residents of the facility were served a pitcher of cleaning solution that was mistaken for cranberry juice. HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it’s suspending its search for an Australian cruise ship passenger in waters south of Hawaii.Kevin Cooper, a search and rescue mission coordinator for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu, said in a news release the Coast Guard decided to call off the search after reviewing the case and discussing it with Australian consular officials and the passenger’s next of kin. The ship Quantum of the Seas notified the Coast Guard of a man overboard Tuesday night when the ship was 500 miles (800 kilometers) south of Kailua-Kona.The Royal Caribbean International cruise ship searched for the passenger for about two hours before resuming its course to the Big Island. A Coast Guard C-130 air crew spent six hours searching on Wednesday before returning to Oahu to refuel. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty Thursday to criminal vehicular homicide after a police pursuit killed an innocent bystander two years ago.In exchange for the plea, a second-degree manslaughter charge against Brian Cummings was dismissed.Prosecutors said Cummings was pursuing a suspected car thief on July 6, 2021, when he ran a red light and hit a car driven by Leneal Frazier, 40, of St. Paul, who died at the scene. Officials said the chase wound through north Minneapolis and reached speeds of up to 100 mph in residential neighborhoods where the speed limit was 25 mph, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Under the plea deal, Cummings, a 14-year police veteran, could serve up to one year in the county workhouse and three to five years of probation.
