Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen lead Avalanche to crucial 5-2 win over Dallas Stars The only passengers Saturday night were the thousands of Avalanche fans buckled into Ball Arena seats for the ride Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen were taking them on.MacKinnon scored twice, inching closer to his first 100-point season, and Rantanen registered four points to lead the Avs to a 5-2 win in their last regular-season meeting with the Stars. With 10:51 remaining after Dallas had seemingly closed the gap to 3-2, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar challenged for goalie interference, a rule that has mystified the Avs throughout the year. It was a high-stakes roll of the dice: Losing would mean a Dallas power play in a one-goal game. But Bednar won, and the lead stuck until empty-netters for Valeri Nichushkin and Rantanen. The Avalanche (45-24-6) desperately needed a win to keep its division title hopes alive on the heels of a regulation loss to first-place Minnesota on Wednesday. Entering the night, the Avs trailed Dallas by two points and Minnesota by three. MacKinnon and compa...

Cron hits third homer but Rockies pitchers issue eight walks in loss to Padres SAN DIEGO — The Rockies tried to overcome a brief, erratic performance from starter Jose Urena on Saturday night at Petco Park. They attempted to overcome the eight walks their pitchers issued.Mission impossible.Despite a three-run, sixth-inning rally powered by an RBI double by Charlie Blackmon, followed up by a two-run homer by C.J. Cron, the Rockies lost, 8-4, to the Padres.San Diego sealed the game with a two-run eighth. The Padres were gifted two walks and a wild pitch by Dinelson Lamet and converted on Juan Soto’s two-run, two-out single. For a while — at least, until Lamet’s meltdown — the Rockies had a puncher’s chance to rally for a victory. That wasn’t the case very often last season when the Rockies hit just 51 homers on the road. In their first three games this year, they have already hit five, three of them by Cron, the team’s lone 2022 All-Star.Urena, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract to return to the Rockies, was off-k...

Colorado on track to make abortion and gender-affirming protections law After more than 29 hours of often tense and emotional debate over three days, Colorado lawmakers passed Democrats’ three priority abortion and gender-affirming-care bills Saturday night. The bills passed Saturday place tighter regulations upon the advertising and unproven scientific claims of crisis-pregnancy centers, codify protections for providers of abortion- and gender-affirming care, and extend insurance coverage to abortion and other reproductive health-related treatment. They represent the latest steps in Democrats’ ongoing efforts to enshrine and expand abortion access in state law amid the national fallout from the Dobbs decision in June, a push that began last year and is set to continue with ballot measures in November 2024.“I’m so glad we were able to deliver on the promise of (the Reproductive Health Equity Act),” said Democratic Rep. Meg Froelich of the bill’s passage. “The new patchwork of laws across the U.S. is confusing and...
