The good news this Thanksgiving is that the price of turkey and eggs is down significantly this year. The bad news is the price of just about everything else is up.The bird flu swept through the country’s turkey farms in 2022, driving up the cost of the Thanksgiving meal centerpiece. The flu also helped boost the price of eggs. The toll on turkeys and overall inflation resulted in a record price tag of $64.05 for a holiday meal for 10 people in 2022, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. The average total for this year’s meal tab is expected to be $61.17, slightly lower but well above the average of $53.31 in 2021 and up a whopping 25% compared to 2019, the farm bureau said.Shoppers might not know the precise percentages involved, but they’re experiencing the increases with every trip to the grocery store. Families having trouble making ends meet are particularly vulnerable as prices stay elevated, and food banks and anti-hunger programs are feeling the ...Owner-opposed landmark application filed for South Park Hill home

In September 2022, a nearly century-old home in South Park Hill sold for the first time since the 1950s.The new owners paid $2.5 million, records show — for the land. They’d like to demolish the structure and build something much larger, plans indicate. But a handful of Denver residents are pushing to mandate preservation of the home. The property in the 5000 block of E. Montview Blvd., along one of the neighborhood’s stately corridors, is Denver’s latest setting for an owner-opposed landmark application. Three women who live nearby, with the help of the nonprofit Historic Denver, submitted the application earlier this month.“If this home is capable of being designated as a landmark, anyone buying or selling a home in Denver should be concerned,” said Mark Rinehart, who owns the home with his wife. The application comes months after the Denver City Council approved an owner-opposed landmark application for just the second time ever. A subsequent lawsuit filed by the owner of that...Colorado dogs in danger from mysterious, potentially fatal respiratory disease

Verity, a rescued black labrador puppy, was in Colorado for eight days when her new foster family realized she was sick.Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue board member Jo Schroeder heard from Verity’s foster family on Aug. 10, just one day after they had taken in the eight-week-old puppy.Verity looked thinner and was less active, her foster family said. Her symptoms quickly worsened — goopy eyes, fever, unwillingness to eat, a cough and rapid breathing. Schroeder and the foster family took Verity to the vet, but they couldn’t figure out what the puppy had caught and referred the group to emergency services.Verity was hospitalized for three days as veterinary staff tried to treat her symptoms and wait for test results, but she kept getting worse.“She was just too tiny to fight it, she didn’t even have an immune system built up yet,” Schroeder said. “She was in the hospital from the 11th to the 14th of August, and the doctor said she just couldn’...Tom’s Starlight has closed; the historic Colfax location is still for lease

Gulf Coast crawfish are back on the menu in Colorado after state officials reversed a decades-long ban on importing the invasive crustaceans that was largely unheeded and unenforced. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission on Friday approved the importation of the red swamp crawfish for human consumption — though with some restrictions. Starting Jan. 1, people who want to bring the southern food staple into the state can do so with an importation license, but they cannot possess the crawfish for more than 72 hours or release them into water. Before the change, it was illegal to import or possess the species because of concerns that the crustaceans would damage lakes and rivers if they made their way into waterways. But the species remained easily available for purchase live or at restaurants. If caught, a violator was subject to a misdemeanor that could carry a fine of up to $5,000. Most of the people cooking and eating the mudbugs were unaware of the regulation banning them, ...Thanksgiving rolls two ways: Easy and fluffy or buttery and rich

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesWith their fluffy crumb and butter-glossed tops, Parker House rolls didn’t need Instagram to become a viral sensation. Ever since their debut in the 1870s, at the Parker House Hotel in Boston, they’ve been the “it” rolls of the breadbasket, as splashy a contribution to the pantheon of baked goods as the Cronut was more than 100 years later.I recently adapted the classic rolls in two ways. One version was entirely from scratch, and another, easier one used prepared pizza dough. Both recipes are superb, and each resulting batch is delightful in its own way.The challenge for the shortcut version was getting lean pizza dough to act as if it were enriched with milk and eggs. By its nature, pizza dough wants to balloon in the oven, developing large bubbles in the crust that singe, blacken and crisp in high heat. Parker House rolls should have a finer, more cakelike crumb without the air pockets you’d expect in a pizza crust. The rolls should also be but...Officers injured in crash on 57 Freeway amid pursuit; NB lanes closed in Fullerton

Q: A couple of weeks ago, someone knocked out the traffic light controller at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Fairmont Drive in Ashland/San Leandro. Since then, the lights defaulted to blinking reds in every direction, and traffic has never flowed more smoothly. The result is decreased travel times, reduced gasoline consumption, less exhaust (helping climate change and those with respiratory problems) and happier drivers. This intersection is rather busy since it provides on/off ramps to Interstate 580, as well as access to Alameda County facilities, including the sheriff’s offices, a hospital and a youth detention facility. A few blocks away is Bayfair Center mall, a major retail center. It raises the question: Have we overengineered intersections? Why don’t we look at converting traffic lights to blinking red or yellow, as appropriate? Would that not result in a win for everyone?— Brian A.
