(AP/WSVN) — Pilots at American Airlines have voted to authorize a strike, and Southwest Airlines pilots are preparing to join them, as unions put more pressure on the airlines to approve new contracts with hefty pay raises. The actions by pilots are highly unlikely to lead to walkouts anytime soon.On Monday, however, pilots across the country picketed, including at Miami International Airport. “It’s a demonstration of our frustration with the slow progress at the negotiations table, our contracts been overdue now, we’ve been negotiating for four years and were still unable to come to some real win-win solutions with the company at the table,” said President of Allied Pilots Association Ed Sicher. Federal law prohibits airline unions from striking without the approval of a U.S. mediation board – a rare step that has not occurred with negotiations at either American or Southwest. Congress and the president can also act to prevent a strike if one appears imminent...Everything you need to know about King Charles III’s coronation

DIVERNON, Ill. (AP) — A windstorm in south-central Illinois kicked up dangerous clouds of dust off farm fields Monday, blinding drivers and causing numerous crashes and “multiple fatalities” on Interstate 55, police said. The late morning crashes involved 40 to 60 cars and multiple tractor-trailers, two of which caught fire, Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick said. The highway was shut down in both directions in Montgomery County, 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of St. Louis.“The cause of the crashes is due to excessive winds blowing dirt from farm fields across the highway, leading to zero visibility,” Starrick said at a news conference. He reported that there were “multiple fatalities” but did not give an exact number, saying that would be released later in the day.Winds at the time were gusting between 35 mph (56 kph) and 45 mph (74 kph), the National Weather Service said.“It’s very flat, very few trees,” meteorologist Chuck Schaffer said. “It’s been very dr...DeSantis signs death penalty, crime bills as 2024 run looms

A woman was taken to an area hospital Monday after a piece of falling electrical equipment hit her at the Harvard MBTA station, according to Cambridge fire officials. Officials said the incident happened Monday afternoon when the approximately 200 pound piece of equipment fell on the station’s Red Line inbound platform. The equipment had been suspended from a pole within the station and hit a woman in her late 20s as it came down, officials said. Officials said the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The scene was clear as of around 5:15 p.m., though debris could still be seen on a Red Line platform roped off with caution tape. This incident follows a matter of weeks after a ceiling panel fell on a platform at Harvard station on March 1. Officials said the panel served to boost the aesthetics of the station and absorb noise, adding that it weighed between 20 and 25 pounds. The T later released video of the incident, showing the panel narrowly missing a ...New images show pipe bomb found in truck of man accused in Weare, NH explosions

Spring in New England… if you know, you know. We’ve spent the last 12 days below average in Boston, our last above average day was April 18th! We broke that trend today, but only for a day as we head back in the other direction for the rest of this week.It was nice to see the sun back today after a very gray and wet weekend. Saturday wasn’t too bad with the rain showers holding off until Saturday evening. But starting Saturday evening until the rain ended this morning, we had some pretty impressive totals across the area — some towns approaching 4″ of rain! There were localized downpours especially overnight last night which is why some of these totals varied from one side of town to the other. Take Beverly for example, the airport reported 3.03″ of rain with another report of 3.88″. Either way, it was a soaker for everyone across New England.Despite the last two days being quite a soaker across New England, the month of April actually broug...Latest news
